Matt Cutts, Christmas Elf?

On Christmas Eve, while most of us were hanging out with family drinking egg nog, Matt Cutts was answering questions on the Google Webmaster Forum.  In this particular thread the question was “Can Press Releases count as spam links?” Matt Cutts decided to chime in, saying “Note: I wouldn’t expect links from press release web sites to benefit your rankings, however.”

Could it be that Matt likes spreading a little holiday cheer by providing useful nuggets to SEO’s out there?  Or is Google’s head of webspam just trying to find something to keep him busy while at the in-laws?

While using press releases for link building is a tactic straight out of 2005, press releases can still be useful if the release itself is newsworthy and can draw some actual press.  If you or your SEO company are using press releases as an SEO tactic, it’s time to rethink that strategy, officially.
